What Is the S&P 500 Index?
The S&P 500 is a widely-quoted index, representing the market-capitalization-weighted index of the 500 largest U.S. publicly traded companies. It uses a market capitalization weighting method, giving a greater percentage allocation to companies with the biggest market capitalizations.
